Given:

Leela decides to select either a formal shirt with a pair of formal pants (not with jeans) or a denim shirt

with a pair of jeans (not with formal pants).

To find:

The total number of ways she can select the outfit now are :

Solution:

From given, we have,

Two types of pants - Jeans and Formal, with 2 choices for each of them - Formal and Denim.

⇒ 3 choices for formals and 4 choices  for denims.

∴ The total available choices for shirt  = 3 + 4 =  7

Jeans and Formal pants with 2 choices for each of them

⇒ The total available choices of pants  = 2  +  2  = 4

a formal shirt with a pair of formal pants

= 3 choices for shirt  ×  2 choices for formal paint = 3 × 2  = 6

a denim shirt  with a pair of jeans

= 4 Choices for shirt × 2 Choices for Jeans = 4 × 2 = 8

∴ The total number of ways she can select the outfit now are  6 + 8  = 14 ways
