Answer:

This is simple maths equations. Resistors are R1 and R2

When in series the resistor Values = R1+R2 = 100

From this we can deduce that R1 = 100-R2 as well as R2 = 100-R1

When in Parallel the value is { R1 *R2 ]/(R1+R2 = 24 Ohms

In parallel combination the equation become [R1 * R2]/100 = 24

Therefore R1 * R2 = 2400

Substituting R2 from series equation, it becomes

R1*(100-R1) = 2400

100 R1 - R1^2 = 2400

R1^2 -100R1= -2400

R1^2 -100R1+2400 = 0

This equation is factorized into

R1^2 -40R1–60R1 +2400 = 0

R1(R1–40) -60(R1–40)=0

(R1-40)(R1–60) = 0

Therefore R1 = 40 OR 60

Hence R2 = 60 OR 40

Therefore we can take R1 = 40 & R2 = 60

Answer:

The two resistances are 40 ohm and 60 ohm.

Explanation:

This can be determined by using Ohm's law.

When two resistances are connected in series, the total resistance is equal to the sum of the two resistances.

Therefore, if the equivalent resistance is 100 ohm, the two resistances must be 40 ohm and 60 ohm.

Similarly, when two resistances are connected in parallel, the total resistance is equal to the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the two resistances.

Therefore, if the equivalent resistance is 24 ohm, the two resistances must be 40 ohm and 60 ohm.

To double-check the answer, we can add the two resistances together to get the total resistance when connected in series and calculate the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the two resistances when connected in parallel.

In both cases, we should get the equivalent resistance of 100 ohm and 24 ohm respectively.

Thus, the two resistances are 40 ohm and 60 ohm.
