The elements whose valencies are not constant to one but exhibit different valencies, are said to have variable valency. This happens only when the penultimate shell becomes unstable in elements, then, electrons jump to the outermost one and thus, valency alters. Like in Copper, the electronic configuration is (2,8,18,1) = 29 but it appears like this = (2,8,17,2) = 29, Thus, the valency of copper changes from 1- to 2-.
I. Copper = It also shows 2+
2. Silver = It also shows 2+.
3. Lead = It also shows 4+.
4. Stannic (Tin) = It also shows 4-.
