2. a) Prospero tells Miranda that he used his magic to create the storm. It had been his good fortune to have his enemies arrive off the shore of the island, and this was his chance to regain his dukedom.

5. b) Ariel is the magical spirit that serves Prospero in return for freeing him from Sycorax (Caliban's mother).

c) (Assuming it is Act 1, Scene 1 ) He is a sympathetic character in that he was wronged by his usurping brother, but his absolute power over the other characters and his overwrought speeches make him difficult to like. In our first glimpse of him, he appears puffed up and self-important, and his repeated insistence that Miranda pay attention suggest that his story is boring her. The pursuit of knowledge gets Prospero into trouble in the first place. By neglecting everyday matters when he was duke, he gave his brother a chance to rise up against him. His possession and use of magical knowledge renders him extremely powerful and not entirely sympathetic.

a) Prospero told Miranda that he was the Duke of Milan and she was the princess and his only heir. He was interested in occult and loved reading books related to magic. The books are what give prospero his magic. When he reached the enchanted island with his daughter, he used this magic to survive on the island. Prospero wanted to teach a lesson to Antonio so he commanded Ariel to create a violent storm in the sea to punish Antonio.

b) Ariel was the chief of the good spirits which had been imprisoned by Sycorax the witch and been released by Prospero. He was the lively little spirit. He obeyed the commands of Prospero

and and rendered useful service to him. he controlled Caliban the wicked son of the witch Sycorax.
