Hi friend,

When Franz entered the school, he noticed that there was unusual silence and there was no noise of opening and closing of desks. The village elders had occupied the last benches that were nearly always empty and M. Hamel was in his very fine Sunday clothes. Also, everybody looked sad.

Franz noticed that everything was solemn and quiet at school that day. There was no hustle and bustle, the opening and closing of desks, the lessons being repeated loudly by the students and the loud rapping of the ruler on the teacher's desk. The quietness was unusual and surprising.
