• Edla, the daughter of an ironmaster. She is characterized as not pretty at all but natural and sheepish. She was gracious and she persuaded the peddler to visit her house and also convinced her dad to welcome the peddler and tell him to stay there for Christmas eve.

• When Edla arrived at the mill of iron to bring the peddler, she thought that he was scared. She was suspicious that the peddler had stolen something or had eloped from prison.
• His looks put her in confusion about whether he was really educated or not.
