Rocket work on the principle of conversation of linear momentum and Newtons Third law firm of motion . Every action has an equal and opposite reaction . When liquid/gas is pushed out of the rocket , the rocket gets pushed forward . An object will always try to conserve its momentum ot remain in its state of rest so when there is a force that pushes the liquid / gas out back to maintain its state of rest .
