Given : Niveen makes muffins and sells them for $0.65 each.

To make 12 muffins, she must spend $5.25 on muffin mix, $0.75 on vegetable oil, and $0.87 on eggs.

The smallest batch of muffins Niveen can make is 12 muffins.

To Find  :  Which of the following situations would result in Niveen earning a profit?

Solution:

Cost per 12  =  5.25  + 0.75  + 0.87   = 6.87  $

Cost of 36  = 3 *   6.87  = 20.61 $

Selling 30  at    $0.65  = 19.5  $  not profitable

Selling 36  at    $0.65 with 10 % discount   =36 * 0.65 * 0.9 = 21.06 $

profitable

Selling 36  at    $0.65 with 10 % discount

Cost per 12 when half eggs used =  5.25  + 0.75  + 0.87/2    = 6.435  $

Cost of 48  = 4 *   6.435  = 25.74 $

Selling 39  at    $0.65  = 25.35  $  not profitable

Cost per 12 when butter used  =  5.25  + 1.85  + 0.87     = 7.97  $

Cost of 48  = 4 *   7.97  = 31.88 $

Selling 48  at    $0.65  = 31.2  $  not profitable

Selling 36    with 10 % discount  on original price is profitable
