MAGNETISM

It is given to us that there are 3 bars :-

  • Bar 1 ; Bar 2 ; Bar 3

Result of Experiment given :-

  • VWXYZ

These letters show the end points of the 3 bars.

  • V - End Point of Bar 1
  • WX - End Points of Bar 2
  • YZ - End Points of Bar 3

Result in terms of attraction/repulsion is as under :-

  • V(Bar 1) attracts W(Bar 2)
  • V(Bar 1) repels X(Bar 2)
  • V(Bar 1) attracts Y(Bar 3)
  • V(Bar 1) attracts Z(Bar 3)

By the above result we can have two scenarios :-

(1) V = North

    W = South

    X = North

    Y = South

    Z = South

(2) V = South

    W = North

    X = South

    Y = North

    Z = North

Observe the above scenarios carefully :-

Can we have two same poles in a single bar magnet?

The answer is NO.

We can see that, YZ points both have same poles - either N-N or S-S which is not possible in a bar magnet. So, Bar 3 isn't a magnet.

Now, coming to other two Bars.

We can see, that both the ends of Bar 2 are able to perform attraction and repulsion respectively. They have either N-S poles or S-N poles. So, Bar 2 is a magnet.

In the case of Bar 1, we aren't given any results for the other end point so we cannot say with a guarantee that the other end point of Bar 1 will work in an opposite way to V. So, we cannot say whether Bar 1 is a magnet or not.

Therefore, BAR 2 is the only magnet in the above question.

The bar 2 is magnet.

Explanation:

The image given in the question is attached below.

  • A magnet has north pole and south pole. The poles of same orientation repel and poles of different orientation attract each other.
  • The bar 3 attracts for both the sides whereas the bar 2 attracts and repels each other. The bar 1 has given only one end.
  • Since, the bar 2 has both north pole and south pole. Thus, bar 2 is a magnet whereas bar 1 & 3 is not a magnet.
