Magnet have a range in which it can attract a magnetic objects.

In laboratory, he uses compass but there is no response because of short range between compass and the north pole . And it can also possible that there is magnetic object in laboratory.

In field, he again uses compass and now it works because now there is a contact between compass and the north pole and field is a free and open place by which the chances of compass working increased.
