This is because  a⋅b  is defined as  |a||b|cos(θ)  where  θ  is the angle between  a  and  b .

That is, it is the product of their magnitudes and the cosine of the angle between them. Of course, if the angle is  90∘ , then  cos(90∘)=0  and so  a⋅b  will  be 0
