Cations are always smaller than its parent atom because by the loss of one or two electrons in same valance shell , effective nuclear charge increases.due to this, force of attraction of nucleus for the electrons increases and hence, ionic radii decreases.
Anion are always larger than its parent atom because by the gain of one or more electrons in same valance shell , effective nuclear charge decreases . due to this , force of attraction of the nucleus for electrons decreases and hence, ionic radii increases.
