(a) Butane burns completely in air or oxygen to form carbon dioxide gas and water vapour. In limited
supply of air it burns carbon monoxide and water vapour. The same gases are found in exhaust
of automobiles. Both the gases are atmospheric pollutants.
(1) Write an equation for the complete combustion of butane in air.
(i) What danger is associated with carbon monoxide in air?
(iii) What effect is associated with too much of carbon dioxide in air?
(iv) Burning of ethyne in oxygen under appropriate conditions produces a very hot flame. What
is this flame used for?
