The crofter allowed the peddler to stay for the night in his cottage. He welcomed the peddler with a smiling face. He was an old man without wife or child. Therefore, he became happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness. He served him supper and gave him tobacco. He played ‘Majolis’ the game of cards to entertain himself also. He got more friendly with the peddler by showing him the money kept in the pouch.

The crofter was so talkative and friendly with the peddler because of the following reasons-

  • The crofter lived on his own in a small cottage by the roadside since he didn't have a wife or children.
  • Being alone and lonely, the crofter found relief when the peddler knocked on his door.
  • He felt happy to have some company with whom he could talk and get rid of the monotony in his life.
  • So, he was friendly with the peddler and even trusted him.
