Question 5 Now think why
— Tiruvananthapuram has equable climate?
— Chennai has more rains only after the fury of monsoon is over in most parts of the country?
— Jodhpur has a hot desert type of climate?
— Leh has moderate precipitation almost throughout the year?
— While in Delhi and Jodhpur most of the rain is confined to nearly three months, in Tiruvanantapuram and Shillong it is almost nine months of the year? In spite of these facts see carefully if there are strong evidences to conclude that the monsoons still provide a very strong framework lending overall climatic unity to the whole country.

i)
thiruvanthipuram is located in Kerala along the Malabar Coast. the climate is equable due to the moderating influence of the ocean. the hottest month has temperature of 28.7°C, while coldest month has a temperature of 26.2°C.

summer's are not hot while winters are not cold.

ii)
Chennai has more rains only after the Fury of monsoon is over in most part of the country as Chennai receive rainfall from retreating monsoons.
Chennai receive rainfall from the Bay of Bengal branch of the south west monsoons which is less powerful than the Arabian Sea branch.

iii)
Jodhpur is an inland town in Northwest part of India located away from the Sea it is a Sandy desert where hot dry winds and Sandy storms blow here . So May has a temperature of 33.3°C. Aravalli's are unable to check monsoons and hence do not cause rainfall. The annual rainfall is 36.6 CM. Therefore Jodhpur has a hot desert type of climate. In this climate winter temperature are below 0°C.

iv)
Leh( Ladakh) is located towards the north of the Great Himalayas .It gets rainfall as well as snowfall throughout the year due to its height and the northern cold winds. Annual rainfall is only 8.7 CM . Winter cyclones also cause snowfall. In summer there is less rainfall because it lies in the rain Shadow area.

v)
The duration of rainy season varies from one region to another. In Delhi and Jodhpur normally the monsoons arrive on the 1st of July and begin to withdraw from this region by the 15th of September. Hence the rainy season is hardly of 3 months duration.

On the other hand in Thiruvanthipuram and Shillong the monsoon arrives on the 1st of June and withdraw by the 15 of October. After this tropical cyclones causes rainfall in this regions. North Eastern monsoon causes rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram till February. After that the mango showers cause some rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram and the North Eastern part of India (Shillong ) receive some rainfall from kalbaishakhi (calamity in the month of Baisakhi)..
