All pulses except, arhar helps in soil fertility, by fixing nitrogen from the air, that is why they are mostly grown in rotation with other crops.

Role – They are a major source of protein in a vegetarian diet and India has more number of vegetarians. Also non vegetarian food is expensive and most of the Indians depend on vegetarian food.

(1) It is used as food as well as fodder.

(2) It is a Kharif crop, but in some states, like Bihar, its grown in Rabi season.

(3) It requires temperature between 21. c to 27. c, grows well in alluvial soil.

  • Pulses need less moisture and survive even in dry conditions. Being leguminous crops, all these crops except arhar help in restoring soil fertility by fixing nitrogen from the air. Therefore, these are mostly grown in rotation with other crops.
  • Maize is a crop which is used both as food and fodder. It is a kharif crop which requires temperature between 21oC−27oC and grows well in old alluvial soil. In some states like Bihar maize is grown in rabi season also.
