Indicator: Colliform bacteria

The most basic test used to detect the bacterial contamination in water supply is Total coliform bacteria.  

Although coliform bacteria belong to the same group of pathogens, their presence in water can detect the water contamination and presence of pathogenic bacteria.

Presence of coliform in water is an indicator of water pollution.
