The peddler doesn’t have a very noticeable sense of humour. But one can locate and sense a subtle sense of humour in the way he thinks about the world as being a giant rattrap.

Whenever he gets caught unaware, in the web of deceit spun by his scheming mind, he hides behind the thought that the world is a rattrap and he merely a prey. In this way, he lightens the mood and theme of the story and makes the readers sympathize and endear him.

Hope it helps!

Answer:

The story "The Rattrap" talks about a peddler who had a good sense of humor. When his identity was revealed in front of the Ironmaster, the peddler was not at all afraid. He was not scared of being punished at all. Instead, he managed to make him laugh with his sarcasm. That made the whole scenario light and saved his life. This is how his sarcasm served in lightening the seriousness of the theme of the story as well as endear him to us.
