Opening and closing of stomata -

This is governed by the change in osmotic pressure or turgidity of guard cells.

When guard cells are turgid(entering water from subsidiary cell to guard cell), stomata open and when guard cells are flaccid( leaving water from guards cell to subsidiary cell), stomata close.

 

 

Increase in the turgidity of guard cells, which is due to radial orientation of cellulose microfibrils in the cell wall.
