Question 7.28 Dihydrogen gas is obtained from natural gas by partial oxidation with steam as per following endothermic reaction:

CH4(g) + H2O(g) <---> CO(g) + 3H2(g)


(a) Write as expression for Kp for the above reaction.

(b) How will the values of Kp and composition of equilibrium mixture be affected by

(i) Increasing the pressure

(ii) Increasing the temperature

(iii) Using a catalyst?

(b)
(i) according to Le - Chatelier's principle ,
when pressure increases , equilibrium shifts in the direction where pressure decreases { e.g., equilibrium shifts where number of moles are less }
here , ∆ng = (3 +1) - 2 = +2 > 0 => np > nr
hence, the reaction will be go backward direction. Kp remains unaffected from pressure change.

(ii) reaction is endothermic hence, ∆H = +ve .it means reaction takes place with absorption of heat. hence, increase the temperature , equilibrium shifts in the direction where heat is absorbed. ( e.g., forward direction ). hence value of k also increases.

(iii) catalyst affects rate of both directions equally hence, No effect by using catalyst.
