Read the following passage and answer the given questions.
O
One of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth is that of coral reefs. They have been
rightly termed as the rainforests of the sea. Corals thrive in warm, clear, and shallow waters. They
provide food and shelter to fishes and invertebrates and also protect the shore from erosion. Corals
are known to be colonial and are known to stay stationary for the most part of their lives. It is curious
to note that this animal is often confused with sea plants because of its appearance.
Corals form many types of reefs. Fringing reefs are close to the shore and extend towards the land.
Barrier reefs are separated from the shore by deep and wide lagoons or channels. Atolls are circular
and enclose a shallow lagoon without any land in the center. Coral reefs are intricate and fragile
ecosystems that are still vastly unknown to us. Certain coral species have been found that do not
form reefs and are able to survive in cold, deep
waters. Precious corals in the Pacific ocean is an
example of such corals. Today these ecosystems are under threat due to various reasons like natural
phenomena such as hurricanes, overfishing, and destructive fishing techniques used by humans, oil
spills, pollution, coastal development, etc. Global warming causes a rise in the temperature of water
in seas resulting in bleaching of corals. Nutrient-rich fertilizer runoff causes eutrophication
and
sediment-rich runoff blocks
sunlight. Both of these can be detrimental to the life of corals.
Which of the following is true about barrier reefs?
