(CN)2 + 2OH- -----> CN- + CNO- + H2O
oxidation number of C in (CN)2 is +3
oxidation number of C in CN- is +2
oxidation number of C in CNO- is +4

here we observed that , (CN)2 is oxidised as well as reduced . hence, this reaction is disproportionation reaction.
The following information , I observed
(i) Decomposition of Cyanogen in the Cyanide ion and cyanate ion occurs in basic medium.

(ii) Cyanogen acts as both oxidising as well as reducing agent .

(iii) this reaction is the example of disproportionation reaction.

(iv) Cyanogen is called pseudohalogen while CN- and CNO- ions are pseudohalide ions .[ because these are not exist in practical ]
