Mathew Perry and Tom Cruise started from a common point on a circular track in
opposite directions towards each other at the same time. The radius of the track is 7
m. After every meeting, they exchanged their speeds as well as directions. If Mathew
starts at a speed 4 times that of Tom, then find the total distance Tom would have
covered when he met Mathew for the 22nd time (pi = 22/7).​

Solution :-

→ Radius of track = 7 m

so,

→ Length of track = Distance covered in one round = 2πr = 2 * (22/7) * 7 = 44 m .

now, since both are running in opposite direction , in every meeting they complete 1 round . ( or cover 44 m .)

given that,

→ speed of mathew = 4 * speed of tom

→ speed of mathew / speed of tom = 4/1

→ usual speed ( in opposite direction ) = 4 + 1 = 5

so,

→ Distance covered by mathew in first meeting = 44 * (4/5) = (176/5) m

→ Distance covered by tom in first meeting = (44 * (1/5) = (44/5) m .

now, in second meeting , they exchanged their speed .

so,

→ Distance covered by mathew in second meeting = (44/5) m

→ Distance covered by tom in second meeting = (176/5) m

then,

→ Distance covered by tom in two meetings = (44/5) + (176/5) = (220/5) = 44 m = Length of track .

therefore, we can conclude that, each of them completes 1 round in two meeting .

hence,

→ Distance covered by tom in 22 meetings = 11 rounds = 44 * 11 = 484 m (Ans.)
