A metal carbonate X on heating with an acid gives a gas which when passed through a solution Y gives carbonate back. On the other hand, a gas G that is obtained at anode during electrolysis of brine is passed on dry Y; it gives a compound Z, used for disinfecting drinking water.

  • Identify X,Y,G and Z.
  • Write all the three reactions involved.

\huge{\underline{\underline{\bf Required \: Answer}}}

Recognition of X,Y,G and Z

  • \sf X \:  is \:  Calcium  \: Carbonate \:  or  \: CaCO_{3}
  • \sf y \:  is  \: Calcium \: Hydroxide \:  or \: Ca (OH)_{2}

  • \sf G  \: is  \: Chlorine \:  gas  \: or \:  Cl_{2}
  • \sf Z  \: is  \: Bleaching  \: powder  \: (Calcium  \: Oxychloride)  \: or  \: CaOCl_{2}

Reactions involved are as follows:-

\sf CaCO_{3} + 2HCl \longrightarrow CaCl_{2}+CO_{2}+H_{2}O

  • in this reaction, carbon dioxide gas is produced which reacts with Calcium Hydroxide (Slaked lime) to give back calcium carbonate.

\sf CO_{2} + Ca(OH)_{2} \longrightarrow CaCO_{3}

  • Chlorine is a gas produced at anode during electrolysis of brine. It reacts with Slaked lime to produce bleaching powder

\sf Ca(OH)_{2} + Cl_{2}\longrightarrow CaOCl_{2}

Given :-

A metal carbonate X on heating with an acid gives a gas which when passed through a solution Y gives carbonate back. On the other hand, a gas G that is obtained at anode during electrolysis of brine is passed on dry Y; it gives a compound Z, used for disinfecting drinking water.

To Find :-

a) Identify X , Y , G and Z .

b) Write all the three reactions involved .

The answer should be only according to 10th Standard .

Used Concepts :-

  • If a metal carbonate is heated with an acid then it always produces Carbon - di - oxide ( gas ) , Water and a corresponding salt .
  • Bleaching powder is used for disinfecting water because presence of Chlorine in it .

Solution :-

Firstly , Electrolysis are of many types but you have said that answer should be according to only Class 10th , So we will apply only that Electrolysis that we have studied in Class 10th .

a )

As here it is given that the metal carbonate "X" when heated with an acid gives a gas which when passed through a solution "Y" gives carbonate back .

As we know that , if a metal carbonate reacts with an acid . So it produces Carbon dioxide gas obviously .

So , the solution "Y" will be slaked like / Calcium Hydroxide and "X" will be Calcium Carbonate .

On Checking :-

If Calcium Carbonate is heated with Hydrochloric acid . So , it produces water , Carbon dioxide gas and a corresponding salt and when carbon dioxide gas is passed through a solution of Calcium Hydroxide ( aqueous ) it gives Calcium Carbonate back and turns the solution Milky .

You can see from the above attachment that Chlorine gas is given off at anode in electrolysis of brine . So , "G" is Chlorine gas .But for that it is chlorine gas it should be applicable on the other case . Let , check this ,

If chlorine gas is passed through dry Slaked lime , It gives a compound "Z" Which is used for disinfecting water .

So , we have to find "Z" and if "Z" is used for disinfecting water . Then , we are done !

If chlorine gas is passed through dry Slaked lime then it produces bleaching powder ( Calcium oxy chloride ) which is also used as an disinfecting agent . And If a question arises how to prepare bleaching powder So, you can say that by passing chlorine gas in dry Slaked lime.

So , X = Calcium Carbonate

Y = Slaked Lime / Calcium Hydroxide

G = Chlorine gas

Z = Bleaching Powder / Calcium Oxy Chloride .

b ) For reactions kindly see the above attachments .

Note :- Brine is the aqueous solution of Sodium Chloride / Common Salt.
