Step-by-step explanation:

let the original sped be X km/ h

let the time taken be y hours

length of journey = xy

case 1

speed = (x+5)(y-3) =5y-3x =15

case 2

speed = (x-4)(y+3)= 3x -4y = 12

NOW

SOLVE THE 2 EQUATIONS

Qᴜēsᴛíóɴ :-

A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train had been 5 kmph faster, it would have taken 3 hours less than the scheduled time. And, if the train were slower by 4 kmph, it would have taken 3 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the length of the journey.

ᴠᴇɴ :-

  • If the train had been 5 kmph faster, it would have taken 3 hours less than the scheduled time.

  • if the train were slower by 4 kmph, it would have taken 3 hours more than the scheduled time.

Fíɴᴅ :-

  • Length of the journey

Sôʟᴜᴛîóɴ :-

Let,

  • speed of train = x km/h

  • time taken = y hrs

  • Length of journey = xy km

(x + 5) (y - 3) = xy

⟹ xy - 3x + 5y + 5 = xy

⟹ 3x - 5y + 15 = 0 _______( 1 )

(x - y) (y + 3) = xy

⟹ xy + 3x - 4y - 12 = xy

⟹ 3x - 4y - 12 = 0 ________( 2 )

( 1 ) - ( 2 ) = -y + 27 = 0

-y = -27

y = 27 hours

( 2 ) ⟹ 3x = 12 + 4 (27)

3x = 12 + 108 = 120

x = 120/3

x = 40 km/h

Length of journey = xy = 27 × 40

= 1080

The length of the journey is 1080 km
