Concept:

Nucleon number also known as mass number is defined as the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.

Given:

The atom having elctronic configuration 2, 8, 4 and nucelon number 28.

Find:

Number of protons, neutrons and electrons present in the given atom.

Solution:

Nucleon number of atom = 28

By adding the numbers in electronic configuration,                                Atomic number of atom = 14

The number of electrons present in an atom is equal to an atomic number of the element. So, number of electrons in the atom = 14

Also, number of protons are equal to number of electrons in an atom.

Number of protons = 14

Nucleon number = Number of neutrons + Atomic number

Number of neutrons = 28 - 14

Number of neutrons = 14

Hence, the atom contains 14 protons, 14 electrons and 14 neutrons.
