Answer;- Job Charnok,an agent of the East India Company chose the fishing village of Kalikata,Sutanuti and Gobindpur to set up a trading settlement. The local Zamindar sold it to the British in 1698. The settlement was soon Fortified and called Fort William. As British power grew in India,they did the small port town of Calcutta. It emerged in the late 18th century as the political, economic, social and cultural centre of British power in India.The British made Calcutta the capital of British India in 1772 .

- There were three villages: Kalikata, Sutanuti and Gobindapur. Of which, Kalikata was a fishing hamlet and Sutanuti a riverside weaver's village.
- In 1698, the rights to collect taxes were transferred to the East India Company from the local zaminders.
- In 1712, the British company constructed Fort William. However in 1756, it was captured by Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah. But in 1757, the Nawab was defeated by the East India Company soldiers.
- In 1773, the Company made Calcutta their headquarters and thus Calcutta became a Capital city of the then India from a fishing hamlet.
