Destructive distillation of coal -
• The process of heating coal in the absence of air to obtain useful product is called destructive distillation of coal .
• Various useful products obtained are - Coke , coal gas , coal tar, ammoniacal liquor
• Finely powdered coal taken in a test tube is heated
• As a coal breakdown coke , coal tar , ammonia and coal gas are produced
• Coal tar collects at the bottom of the second test tube and coal gas get escaped out through the side tube
• The ammonia produced the absorbed in water forming ammoniacal liquor ( ammonium hydroxide )
• The black residue left in the first test tube is called coke .
