They are used so as to protect wires and components from the extreme heat produced should there be an electrical overload or short circuit.If the current exceeds the safe limit, the fuse melts and breaks, the circuit then becomes open and prevents the flow of current into the household circuit thus preventing the electrical appliances in the circuit from being damaged
