Step-by-step explanation:

we will use quadratic formula to find solution-

 \frac{ - b +  \sqrt{b - 4(ac)} }{2a}

 \frac{1  +  \sqrt{( - 1) ^{2}  - 4 \times (1 \times  - 4)} }{2}

substitute the values a=1 ,b=-1 and c=4

 \frac{x = 1 +  \sqrt{17} }{2}

 \frac{x = 1 + 17}{2}  \:  \:  \:  \frac{1 -  \sqrt{17} }{2}
