Given :-

Di - Benzal Acetone .

To Prepare :-

The Given .

Solution :-

Aim :- To prepare Di - Benzal Acetone ( C6H5 - CH = CH - CO - CH = CHC6H5 ) .

Material Required :- 100 ml Conical flask , Beaker , Bunsen Burner and funnel etc .

Chemicals Required :- Benzaldehyde , Acetone ,Sodium Hydroxide , Rectified Spirit , etc .

Procedure :-

  1. Take a conical flask of 100 ml and add 2.5 ml Benzaldehyde , 1.0 ml acetone and 25 ml of methylated spirit . Cork the flask and shake to obtain a clear solution .
  2. Take 5 ml of 10% NaOH solution in a test tube and add this to conical flask drop by drop by shaking off the flask .
  3. Cork the flask again and shake vigorously for about 10 minutes , realising pressure from time to time .
  4. Allow it to stand for about 20 minutes at room temperature and then cool in ice water .
  5. Filter the yellow coloured solid and wash it with water .
  6. Recrystallization of Dibenzal acetone :- Dissolve the crude product in a clean test tube , in about 1 ml of methylated spirit and warm in boiling water taken in a beaker . Add more methylated spirit in parts to dissolve all the solid . Filter , while hot , into a test tube and cool the filtrate in ice water . Filter off the pale yellow and leave them to dry and then weigh the crystals .

Observations :-

  1. Colour of crystals = Yellow
  2. M.P. of Dibenzal acetone is around 112°C .
