In humans there are normally 12 pairs of ribs. The first seven pairs are attached directly to the sternum by costal cartilages and are called true ribs.

The 11th and 12th pairs—floating ribs—are half the size of the others and do not reach to the front of the body.

The rib cage surrounds the lungs and the heart, serving as an important means of bony protection for these vital organs.

In total, the rib cage consists of the 12 thoracic vertebrae and the 24 ribs, in addition to the sternum.
