Option b) 3mg

Given:

Length of the string of the pendulum = l

To find : Minimum strength needed to withstand the tension as the pendulum passes through its mean position.

Let the velocity of the pendulum at the mean position be 'v' and the tension be 'T'.

Let the initial position be 'A' and the mean position be 'O'.

Applying Work-Energy theorem from A to O,

W = ΔKE

mgl = \frac{mv^{2} }{2}

mv^{2} = 2mgl      ------ (1)

Applying Circular Motion equation at point O,

\frac{mv^{2} }{l} = T-mg

From (1),

\frac{2mg}{l} = T-mg

2mg = T-mg

T = 3mg
