Answer :
- The required fraction is 15/3.
Given :-
- If 1 is added in the numerator and denominator, then fraction becomes 4.
- If we subtract 1 from both numerator and denominator then fraction becomes 7.
To Find :-
- The fraction ?
Solution :-
- Let the numerator of fraction be m and denominator of fraction be n. So, the fraction is numerator/denominator i.e, m/n.
★ According to the question :
- If 1 is added in the numerator and denominator, then fraction becomes 4.
Therefore,
➻ m + 1/n + 1 = 4
➻ m + 1 = 4(n + 1)
➻ m + 1 = 4n + 4
➻ m = 4n + 4 - 1
➻ m = 4n + 3 (Eqⁿ - 1)
Also,
- If we subtract 1 from both numerator and denominator then fraction becomes 7.
Therefore,
➻ m - 1/n - 1 = 7
➻ m - 1 = 7(n - 1)
➻ m - 1 = 7n - 7
➻ m = 7n - 7 + 1
➻ m = 7n - 6 (Eqⁿ - 2)
From (1) and (2) we get,
➻ 4n + 3 = 7n - 6
➻ 7n - 4n = 3 + 6
➻ 3n = 9
➻ n = 9/3
➻ n = 3
• Put n = 3 in (2) we get,
➻ m = (7 × 3) - 6
➻ m = 21 - 6
➻ m = 15
Therefore,
- Numerator (m) = 15
- Denominator (n) = 3
- Fraction (m/3) = 15/3
Verification :-
We know that,
➻ m - 1/n - 1 = 7
• Put m = 15 and n = 3 in above equation
We get,
➻ 15 - 1/3 - 1 = 7
➻ 14/2 = 7
➻ 7 = 7
➻ LHS = RHS
- Hence, verified.
