How to compose a Poem ?
Being able to compose poems is a talent. Anyone could compose a poem related to a particular theme.
There are various steps for a composing a poem, few of them which will help you get started are mentioned below.
→ Figure out the Topic.
This is the most easiest part. The factor which brings you to writting the poem, is the topic which you want to convey to others. It can range from anything to anywhere. Make sure you know what you will convey and try to bring out all ideas in your mind before writting the poem. Refer few poems, read and understand it to get clear of poem theming.
→ Writing a Rough Content of your Poem.
You figured out the content you're about to write in the previous step. Now it's time to write a rough script on what are the things you want to talk about in the poem. Jot down your expression of feelings, emotions in line. Write down few words you think will emphazise the meaning you are trying to convey to the readers, or simply words which will make the reader interested in reading the poem. Words do make a great impact! It might also help the reader improve their vocabulary.
→ Including Poetic Devices.
Poetic devices are keys used for enhancing the poem's meaning, create a rhyme scheme etc. Pen few poetic devices in a rough scrap as well. There are various Poetic devices such as
→ Similie.
→ Metaphor.
→ Personification.
→ Alliteration.
→ Imagery.
→ Repetition.
These are just a few which will help make the poem better. There are various others which will help you as well. If you are a new writer, try sticking to uses of Similie, Metaphor and Personification. If you know the uses of all the poetic devices, you can use them according to your wish. I reccomend including a rhyme scheme. But dont overflow the poem with too many poetic devices as it get loaded then.
→ Include inspirations from real life experiences.
Self explanatory, include real life experiences, or learnings you have learnt from your environment if the poem is related to it. This helps readers to relate to the poem, and learn life values from it.
→ Avoid writting sentences which are extremely simple.
Very simple sentences make the poem really blunt and boring, which doesnt grab the attention of the reader. It makes it a poem which no one would look forward to reading.
Eg:
Simple Words: "I worked hard, but it didnt pay off."
Better version: "I put my blood, sweat and tears. But it turned into ashes."
Somewhat like that. My sentence isnt catchy enough, but I bet yours will be.
→ Write the Poem!
Youve already figured out the important aspects of writting the poem, you can now write it down. Dont worry if you make an error, you can always polish it up. If new ideas hit your mind, add em' as well.
→ Hunt for mistakes and read your poem a couple times.
By now you've finished the poem, but having in mind to polish it is not a bad idea. Recheck your poem for errors, overuse of devices etc. If you have new ideas, or want to replace any stanza, this is the time to do so. You might not find all the mistakes, but your companions can. Ask your friends for opinion on the poem and to suggest any edits. Apart from that, they'll motivate you as well.
That's all I could tell! All the best if you're on to writing a poem!
