Both -OCH_3 and -Cl show I- effect as 'O' present in OCH_3 is a strong electron withdrawing group. Cl also shows I- effect again because it is a strong electon withdrawing group.

As said above, both -OCH_3 and -Cl show I- effect. It means the presence of the two groups will lead to increase in acidic strength.Thus, the two given compounds will be more acidic than parent phenol.

  • The order of I- is given by :-

       -NO2  > -CN > -F > -Cl > -Br > -I > -CF3 > -OH > -OCH3 > -C6H5 > H

  • I- effect decreases as we move away from the electron withdrawing group.
  • Basic nature increases with increase in I+ effect.
