A parallel pipe is sometimes installed over a portion of the pipe mainly for increasing the discharge rate.
- If a main pipe splits into two or more branches that rejoin downstream to form a single pipe, the branched pipes are said to be connected in parallel.
- Individual volume flow rates add up to each other and hence provide a summed up larger volume flow rate when pipes are connected in parallel.
- But on the other hand, the head loss still remains the same in parallel connection.
- While in case of series connection, the discharge rate remains the same and is not affected while the head loss increases.
- This is why in a municipal water supply system, pipes are sometimes connected in parallel when there is a need for a large discharge volume.
