Again, according to the question :

x - y = 3 => x = y + 3 ......(2)

On putting the values in equation (1) :

45 = (y+3) + y + 8

=> 45-11 = 2y

=> 2y = 34

=> y = 17

On putting the value of y in equation (2) :

x = 17 + 3

=> x = 20

So, the age of elder son will be 20 years.
