From the figure:
EF lies between AB and CD.i.e the length of halfway between that of AB and CD, so
EF = a+b/2
Area of ABFE = 1/2(a+a+b/2)h
Area of EFCD = 1/2(b+a+b/2)h
ratios are : Area of ABFE/Area of EFCD = 1/2(a+a+b/2)h/1/2(b+a+b/2)h
= 1/8(3a+b)h/1/8(a+3b)/h
= (3a+b)/(a+3b).
Hope this helps!
