Lord Voldemort, who is also known by his original name Tom Marvolo Riddle is truly an enigmatic and quite the complex character in the world of Harry Potter.
If we briefly analyse his character on what we can glean from the books, we can come to the following hypothesis and conclusions,
>> In 1930s and 1940s people are generally religious since it is a time of war, so muggles would probably be scared of Tom's unusual behavior.
This feeling of fear has given him an edge to protect himself from the bullies and elders with cloak and dagger kind of behaviour.
THE ONLY THING A PERSON MUST BE AFRAID OF IS FEAR BECAUSE FEAR WILL ALWAYS MAKES US DO IRRATIONAL THINGS.
>> this is of course enough for young riddle to gain an upper hand and thus rose above the others and considered himself superior of all.
This is the basis of the character of Tom riddle.
But from a young age itself he knew the value and fragility of life through his mother and later all the others he killed.
VOL DE MORT MEANS FLIGHT OF DEATH IN FRENCH.
Due to this fear, he created horcruxes. After all, he is the heir of Salazar Slytherin, house of all the ones who are ambitious.
He is a person who likes CONTROL. We can observe that from the way he dresses in his Hogwarts years.
He wanted to conquer Britain because it gives him power and control. since most of the wizengamot members are pure blood elitists, he manipulated the whole pure blood into his way of thinking and control.
The goal is, if we can control the purebloods then we can control the wizarding Britain.
And when the prophecy came through, you can imagine his reaction...
And thus in order to escape his death ticket he went to kill the potters and thanks to lily potter, he disappeared.
As I said fear will always makes us do irrational things, so time after time Harry Potter defeating Lord Voldemort, made him quite irrational and lead him to do mistakes which lead to failure and then anger and then frustration followed by desperation and then realisation and finally death embraced Lord Voldemort...
