Because we have, for the mass of an atom of carbon 12, call it mC12mC12, that
mC12=12amumC12=12amu
and furthermore
1mol⋅mC12=12g1mol⋅mC12=12g
therefore
mC12=12amu=12g/molmC12=12amu=12g/mol
So finally we get that 1g/mol=1amu1g/mol=1amu .
However, my chemistry teacher is telling me that those are two completely different things and that I am confused between the mass per atom and the mass per 6.022⋅10236.022⋅1023atoms
