Question:

A railway half ticket costs half the full fare, but the reservation charges are the same on a half tickets as on a full ticket. One reserved first class ticket from the station A to B costs Rs. 2530. Also, one reserved first class ticket and one reserved first class half ticket from A to B costs Rs. 3810. Find the full first class fare from station A to B, and also the reservation charges for a ticket.

Solution:

  • Let full first class fare = M

and

  • Reservation charges for ticket = N

A.T.Q.

Case 1)

=> M + N = 2530

=> M = 2530 - N _______ (eq 1)

____________________________

Case 2)

» A railway half ticket costs half the full fare (N/2). Also, one reserved first class ticket (M) and one reserved first class half ticket (M/2) from A to B costs Rs. 3810.

=> M + \dfrac{M}{2} + 2N = 3810

=> \dfrac{2M\:+\:M\:+\:4N}{2} = 3810

=> 3M + 4N = 3810 × 2

=> 3(2530 - N) + 4N = 7620 [From (eq 1)]

=> 7590 - 3N + 4N = 7620

=> N = 7620 - 7590

=> N = 30

Put value of of N in (eq 1)

=> M = 2530 - 30

=> M = 2500

_____________________________

Full first class fare from A to B = M = 2500

Reservation charges for ticket = N = 30
