❄️ Distinguish between varna and jati .

☘️ Answer:-

  1. Varna originates from the word “ VRI “ which means choice of one's occupation. Hence , it is concerned with occupation and its basis are traits of an individual and not its birth. On the other hand, caste or Jati , originates from the word “ JANA “ which implies taking birth . Thus, caste is based on birth.
  2. Varnas are four in numbers , viz . Brahmin , Kshatriya , Vaishya and Shudra . But , castes are very large in numbers and they also have subdivisions called sub castes.
  3. Varnas are relatively flexible because with improvement in his traits and acquisituon of talents and virtues, an individual can improve his status . But , caste system is based on rigid principles and it is , thus ,based on a closed sort of stratification because under this the mobility is restricted.
  4. Varna is an all India phenomenon . But, caste is based on regional variations basically due to linguistic differences.
  5. Varna can be described as an abstract classification of people having mythical origin. As explained in a hymn of Rigveda , the varnas originated from Purushukta . It further describes that the Brahmins are the mouth , Kshatriya are the arms , Vaishyas are the thighs and Shudras are the feets of the creator. On the other hand, caste is a concrete classification of people having ritualistic origin.
  6. Last, but not the least, Varna is free from socio - economic and political disabilities as well as restrictions. On the contrast, Caste system imposes various restrictions on its members.
