The main difference between methane and ethane is that methane contains only one carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms whereas ethane contains two carbon atoms bonded to each other and each carbon atom is bonded to three hydrogen atoms.

methane and ethane are almost equally stable elements. Explanation: but Ethane has chemical formula ch2 where as methane has ch4. Which shows methane has more hydrogen molecules than ethane. As hydrogen is most combustible and it reacts fast.So ch4 is more stable than ch2.

Methane(CH4)

  • Methane is also called Marsh gas.
  • Marsh gas is formed at the bottom of marshes due to fermentation of cellulose by a special type of bacteria.
  • It is contained in intestinal gas and in the blood of animal in human being.
  • Cavities in coal contain 90% of Methane. It is called fire dump.
  • Methane is produced also by dry distillation of wood , peat.
  • Methane is source of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Ethane (C2H6)

  • Ethane occures to the extent of 10 to 20 percentage along with methane.
  • Ethane is colorless, odorless, tasteless and nonpoisonous gas.
  • It is frankly soluble in water but wholly soluble in organic solvent like alcohol ,ethers.
  • Ethane is used in preparation of ethene , ethanol, ethanal and ethanoic acid.
  • It is good fuel.
