Cyanobacteria (Cyanophyta), commonly called blue green algae, are prokaryotes that inhabit a wide variety of habitats as free living, epiphytic, symbiotic or parasitic plants. They form a component of the base of the aquatic food chain, and their photosynthetic activity aerates the habitat.
