Movement of air causes water to evaporate into the atmosphere. Once it reaches a certain height it encounters lower temperatures, where it condenses, forming clouds. Once enough water is condensed in a cloud, it can no longer resist gravity, and it precipitates out of the cloud in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or ice, as determined by the temperature. Once it lands on the earth, it will run over the ground or into it until it congregates into a lake, an underground aquifer, or finds its way to the ocean. Some of this water will be diverted to cities where it may end up in your swimming pool, or a glass of water. Wherever it ends up, as long as there is atmosphere above it, then the cycle starts again. The stages are sometimes labeled differently. Some call the last stage “collection”.
