They created municipalities for this purpose. A municipality was a body of elected members that was responsible for the maintenance of sanitation and public health and the provision of civic amenities like roads electricity and piped drinking water the first municipality created during British rule was the municipal corporation of Madras in 1688 followed by the municipal corporations of Bombay and Calcutta by 1762 .
