Explanation:

Indus valley civilization is known as harappa civilization because it was the first site to be excavated in the region. ... As stated in the other 3 answers, it is called Harappan Civilisation because the first discoveries were made near the town of Harappa now in Punjab Pakistan.

Indus is one River in which other four rivers merged. Mahenjodaro is on Indus. Harappa is not.

It was dug and reported earlier to Mohenjodaro (1921). But the story of Civilization started from findings of Mohenjodaro. It was soon linked to Harappa.

By that time a good portion of Harappa has been used for constructing Lahore Multan Railway job.

Harappa’s first reporting was around 1885 but not fathomed to be a indication of major civilization then.

Subsequently Kalibangan, Dholavira, Lothal, Rakhigari etc came in .Both Harappa and Mohenjodaro is in Pakistan.

More findings came along the dead River Saraswati. Northern part is in India.

Since more towns have been found on this river bank, many have started calling the IVC as Saraswati civilization.
