Linkers are words that connect two sentences or clauses.

Example

  • The phone rings and you listen to the voice on the other side.

In the above example the word and is the linker. The word "and" is joining two sentences to make a one complete sentence.

More Examples:-

  • Learn the answers and write them in your notebook.
  • Mohit is slow but he is a hardworking child.
  • I was absent because I was will.

Linkers are classified into two broad categories.

\bf\red{Co-ordinating\;Linkers}

Co-ordinating linkers are — and, as well as, not only... but also, yet, still, but, neither... nor, either... or. These linkers join independent sentences in three ways.

  • and:— merely add one statement to another
  • but:— add two statements of contrasting ideas
  • or:— add two statements expressing choice.

Example:

  • Do the work and go to sleep.
  • He was absent yesterday but he has completed his work.
  • She wasn't there because she was ill.

All the bold words in above sentences are co-ordinating linker.

The linkers that join the main and the subordinate clause are called subordinating linkers.

Example: You will get a trophy if you win.

In the above example the word "if" is subordinating linker. Subordinating linkers can be classified into nine parts according to their usage.

  1. Time — before, till, since, after, when, as
  2. Place — where, wherever
  3. Cause/Reason — because, as, since
  4. Comparison — than, whereas, such as
  5. Purpose — that, so that
  6. Result — that, so.... that
  7. Condition — if, unless
  8. Manner — as, as if
  9. Concession — although, even if

=> Linkers are words that combine sentences and show the relationship between ideas. Here is an exercise using three basic linkers: and, but and because explain below...:-

And:- We use and to link two related ideas or to add information.

(1)- 'I like tea and coffee.'

(2)- 'On Saturday, we went to the park and the cinema.'

But:- We use but to show a contrast (link a positive and a negative idea).

(1)- 'I enjoy swimming, but I don't enjoy running.'

(2)- 'It was almost midnight, but I couldn't sleep.'

Because:- We use because to show a reason.

(1)- 'I was late because there was so much traffic'

(2)- I couldn't see because it was too dark.'
