Poverty is the serious and economic problem. It can be defined as the situation wherein a large number of people are unable to satisfy even their basic requirements of food, clothing, shelter, education and health.

Poverty line is an imaginary line that separates the people below the poverty line and those above the poverty line.

The three major dimensions of poverty are: Economic, Health and Education.

Subsistence level: A standard of living that provides (or) only bare of necessities.

The social indicators of poverty:

-lack of illiteracy

-lack of job opportunities

-lack of general resistance because of malnutrition

-lack of access to healthcare, safe drinking water and sanitation.

States with highest urban poverty: Bihar, Karnataka, Orissa, Tamil nadu and Uttarpradesh.
